Richard’s teaching english in Vietnam as a foreigner

We are honored to have Richard, one of our esteemed volunteers at VCV, share his experience with us today. Originally from Germany, Richard has been selflessly dedicating his time and effort to our cause for the past few months. His passion for teaching English and positive attitude have made him a valuable asset to our team. We can’t wait to hear more about his experience in volunteering at VCV.

VCV: What motivated you to pursue volunteer teaching opportunities in Vietnam specifically for foreigners?

Richard: I was inspired to embark on volunteer teaching opportunities in Vietnam for foreigners based on my previous volunteering experience. Seeking a fresh environment and approach, I find joy in giving back, and I firmly believe that education is a valuable gift that positively impacts people’s lives.

VCV: How did you find or select programs offering free volunteer teaching opportunities abroad?

Richard: I discovered free volunteer teaching opportunities abroad by conducting online research to identify available programs. Subsequently, I sought reviews and feedback from others to gauge their experiences. Additionally, I verified the programs’ online presence through social media and other platforms.

VCV: What challenges did you face while volunteering for foreigners as an English teacher in Vietnam?

Richard: During my volunteer experience as an English teacher in Vietnam for foreigners, notable challenges included navigating significant cultural and language barriers. Fortunately, longer-tenured volunteers offered valuable assistance, and the students, characterized by their inherent kindness, warmly welcomed me and willingly provided support.

VCV: How did you navigate cultural differences while teaching English in Vietnam?

Richard: Through active engagement with my students, I gained profound insights into their culture, overcoming the initial differences. Their enthusiasm for discussing the rich tapestry of Vietnamese culture fostered meaningful connections during our interactions.

VCV: What kind of impact do you believe volunteer English teaching has on both the students and the community in Vietnam or other countries

Richard: Volunteer English teaching has a profound impact on both students and communities. Engaging with students allows for a cultural exchange that transcends language barriers, fostering a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives. This equips students with valuable career skills and broadens their worldview, making them more open-minded and receptive to global connections.

Moreover, as students become more knowledgeable and globally aware, the community experiences positive ripple effects. This newfound openness contributes to the community’s social and economic success. In Vietnam, for instance, my volunteer experience highlighted the significance of such programs in bridging cultural gaps, ultimately fostering a more interconnected and prosperous community.
